Employing Network Attached Storage to Provide more storage for your Xbox 360 Hard Drive

Recently I have had the privilege of setting up a main network share on my own home N network. One of the main reasons I use my Xbox 360 is to stream my video/music content over my home network.Initially my setup contained one dual core Windows 7 machine offering content to my Xbox.

The serving computer consisted of a depressing hard drive setup (160GB internal and 500GB external) and was wirelessly linked to my router. My Xbox 360 slim was also wirelessly linked to the router. Windows Media Center was not partial to this setup, and stuttering/lag concerns had been widespread.Right after doingresearch and fine-tuning the traffic flow options in my router, no fair solution was found with my initial setup.Even more research and a need for much more storage led me to analyze network attached storage drives.

The principle benefit I found with all the NAS drive is the immediate connection to my router. Considering that thecomputers in my household have been in individual areas, running Ethernet cable to each isn't just a problem but practically impractical. All computers are running the wireless N standard, but offering content nevertheless remains an issue once the providing machine is attached to the router wirelessly. Connecting the NAS drive straight to the router reduces network delay, and has shown to enhance my streaming.

Establishing the Linkstation was a piece of cake.Basically it needed powering on the drive and linking it to my router. I then ran the supplied CD on my computer and the drive was all set. My Xbox 360acknowledged the hard drive without delay, and I was capable of transferring all of my content over no problem. Now all of my windows machines can get to the drive, together with my media streamers.

I propose purchasing a NAS to any individual aiming to backup their DVD and Blu-ray collections along with their music. If you have several machines on your network and have an Xbox 360 this setup is ideal to stream content all over the house. Setup was incredibly easy and now I have a substantial amount storage space capable of holding 100′s of video clips and 1000′s of songs.

I want to know what you think of attached storage.

I think it is a good idea and will be embraced by all. The cloud capabilities it provides to a home in the form of safe backups are valuable to any household, along with the easy streaming potential.
